The White House, pumpkins, baskets of chocolate. Donald Trump and Melania welcome children on Halloween, smiling, handing out sweets. And suddenly two appear before them: a boy in Soviet-style military uniform and a girl in a Russian sarafan with a kokoshnik. The internet immediately begins to search for great political meaning in these few seconds. But the scene has another, much darker and funnier interpretation.

On October 29, 2026, everything really happened on the South Lawn of the White House. In the recording of the official broadcast, you can see Melania touching the boy’s cap, and the presidential couple treating children to chocolate. The cap resembles the headgear of a Soviet tanker, with Soviet symbols; calling it a modern form of the Russian army would be a factual error. Who chose the outfits and why is unknown.
At NANews we suggest paying attention to the holiday itself. Perhaps the visitors to the White House were simply much more inventive than the adult commentators.

The secret of Halloween that everyone somehow forgot
On Halloween, it’s customary to dress up as monsters. Vampires, witches, skeletons, zombies. You put on a scary mask, you get a candy. No one thinks to demand explanations from the parents of a child in a Dracula costume about his views on blood transfusion.
But time changes the perception of horrors. Who today would be scared by a plastic skeleton? It doesn’t launch rockets at residential buildings, doesn’t turn cities into ruins, and doesn’t declare the destruction of another country a historical mission. But military symbols, which current Russian propaganda has made part of its war cult, evoke quite specific memories for many.
Especially for Ukrainians. For a family that survived a night under shelling, the word ‘tanker’ has long ceased to be a heroic picture from an old movie. A costume that might have been conceived as nostalgia for the USSR today can quite be perceived as a character from a horror movie. Only the movie has been running without a break for almost five years.
There is no evidence that the parents wanted to troll anyone. But for good satire, the intention of the costume’s creator is not necessary. It’s enough how the audience saw the result.
White ‘Lada’ instead of a pumpkin carriage
And the girl in the kokoshnik?
Here imagination suggests a completely non-childish scenario. Here stands the conditional ‘soldier’s wife,’ waiting for the due festive reward. Only instead of sweets in Russian reality, there is a payout to the family of the deceased, and instead of a pumpkin carriage — a white ‘Lada.’
This image did not appear out of nowhere. In July 2022, Russian state television showed the parents of a soldier killed in Ukraine who bought a white Lada car with the money received after his death. The plot caused a wave of black humor: state propaganda, it seems, did not even notice what a monstrous picture it presented to the viewers.
This story, of course, has nothing to do with the children at the White House. They came for sweets, not for state compensations. Here the white ‘Lada’ is a symbol of the cynicism of the military system, which has learned to assign a price to human life and present it almost as a story of family well-being.
Hollywood screenwriters can only nervously smoke on the sidelines. It’s easy to come up with a zombie crawling for fresh brains. But the scenario in which a deceased son turns into a plot about buying a new car has already been written by Russian reality itself.
Scary stories understood in Israel too
The Israeli reader does not need an explanation of the difference between carnival anxiety and the real thing. Our children know what a siren is and the road to a protected room. Ukrainian children know their shelters. In such a world, fake fangs and painted blood already poorly compete with reality.
NANews reported how Russian strikes damaged the Israeli Teva warehouse in Ukraine. This is one example of how the Russian war is not an abstract topic far from Israel. And when high-ranking Russian military publicly discuss the disappearance of the Jewish state, the carnival military cap involuntarily acquires another unpleasant dimension.
Trump himself did not play out any such allegories. He handed out candies. Melania greeted the guests. The children received chocolate and moved on. The official camera captured a short meeting, and all geopolitical explanations appeared only after it.
And yet modern Halloween turned out to be a frighteningly accurate advertisement. You can spend years inventing new monsters, spending millions on makeup and special effects. And then someone puts on an old military cap — and adults are no longer in the mood for laughter.
So was it brilliant trolling by the parents or a completely innocent choice of costumes? We don’t know. But for the best political horror of the evening, the internet seems to have already voted. And the candies for the winners were personally handed out by the President of the USA.
