An alarming incident occurred in Kyiv on the eve of the start of the school year: fragments of a rocket were found on the grounds of the Jewish school “Simcha Chabad” and near the Jewish community center, left over from another night shelling of the city by Russia. This incident became another example of the ruthless aggression of Russia, which does not hesitate to shell the civilian population of Ukraine, including children.

An Israeli newspaper wrote about thisחדשות ישראל | 7.

Rabbi Mordechai Levengertz, a Chabad spokesman in Kyiv, called the incident a “great miracle,” noting that the tragedy could have been much worse if the rocket had hit the school building just a few hours later, when hundreds of students were in class. “It’s impossible to imagine what could have happened if it had happened two hours later,” the rabbi said.

Despite this frightening incident, about 200 students still began the school year in schools and kindergartens. This school year has already become the 33rd for this educational institution, which continues to operate despite more than two years of military actions in Ukraine, started by Russia. The beginning of the school year throughout Ukraine is taking place in the most difficult conditions of the war unleashed by Russian aggression.

In many parts of the country, including Kyiv, educational institutions, including the Or Avner-Chabad network of schools where thousands of children are studying, have been forced to adapt to the new reality. They have set up shelters and protective rooms, and students have undergone special training to be able to quickly respond to alarms.

During the summer, many children were able to relax a little and forget about the horrors of war by participating in camps and summer programs organized by the Jewish community. However, the beginning of the school year shows how difficult and unstable the situation in the country remains. The Jewish community, together with all the Ukrainian people, courageously defends their country from Russian aggression, demonstrating fortitude and unity in the face of danger.

However, while the Jewish community in Ukraine is actively involved in defending the country, the state of Israel, unfortunately, does little to help. The Israeli government continues to deal with Putin as if nothing is happening, which is disappointing to those who expect more solidarity and support from the country of the Jews.

Russian aggression, led by Putin, continues to bring pain and suffering to the Ukrainian people. Shelling of civilians, attacks on schools and children's institutions demonstrate the true nature of Putin's regime – a regime that spares no one, including the most defenseless – children. These crimes have caused widespread condemnation by the international community, and on March 17, 2023, the International Criminal Court in The Hague issued an arrest warrant for Putin. He is charged with the illegal deportation of Ukrainian children and the illegal transfer of children from the occupied territories of Ukraine to Russia. These actions qualify as war crimes, and Putin will have to answer for his atrocities before international justice.
