Turkey intends to submit a request on August 7 to formally join the genocide case brought by South Africa against Israel at the International Court of Justice in The Hague.
Turkey has repeatedly criticized Israel for bombing Gaza in its war against Hamas, a terrorist group designated by the United States and the European Union.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan strongly supports the Palestinian issue and condemns the “barbarity” of Israel, which “has demonstrated several times its intention to continue its policy of mass murder.”

The International Court of Justice has already ordered Israel to take all feasible measures to prevent genocide in response to the October Hamas attack, but stopped short of a ceasefire. It also ordered Israel to take all necessary and effective measures to provide the Palestinian population of Gaza with basic food supplies, and in May the court called on Israel to stop military operations against the southern Gaza town of Rafah.

“Our parliament's legal team will file a petition on August 7 to the International Court of Justice in The Hague to join this case,” Erdogan said at a meeting of the presidential cabinet. Turkey is one of the most vocal critics of Israel's military actions in Gaza.

Hamas also has strong regional support from Israel’s longtime foe Iran, where regional tensions have reached a boiling point in recent days following the July 31 assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran. Iran has directly blamed Israel, which has not claimed responsibility for the killing. Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has vowed a military response, putting the region on the brink of a wider war.
