Colombian President Gustavo Petro has signed a decree banning coal exports to Israel. The decision is purely political. Petro has repeatedly criticized Israel for its military actions against Hamas terrorists.

On May 2, 2024, Colombia announced the end of diplomatic relations with Israel. Since the horrific terrorist attack on October 7, Gustavo Petro has not resorted to similar measures against the Palestinian Authority.

The Colombian miners' association expressed outrage at the president's decision, saying the embargo violated existing free trade agreements. Coal producers plan to protest the ban, Bloomberg reports.

Back in June, Petro expressed a desire to ban coal supplies to Israel, despite warnings from business circles about its negative impact on the country's investment climate.
