The Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for a mass shooting in the western German city of Solingen that left three people dead and eight wounded. In a statement on its Telegram account, the militants said the attack was carried out in revenge for Muslims in Palestine and elsewhere.
There is no confirmation of this claim at this time, and it is not known how close the ties are between the attacker and the Islamic State. German police have said they are investigating the possibility that the attack was motivated by terrorism. A 15-year-old boy was arrested at his parents' home early Saturday in connection with the incident, but his identity has not yet been established.
Prosecutor Markus Kaspers noted that the teenager is currently only suspected of failing to report the crime. According to police, the victims of the attack were a 56-year-old woman and two men aged 56 and 67. Police have found a weapon that may have been used in the incident and are conducting DNA testing.
There were no signs of a security threat before the festival, but law enforcement is now actively searching for the killer, including using helicopters and setting up roadblocks. The event was cancelled after the incident, which happened on Friday, August 23, and attracted up to 25,000 visitors daily.
