On September 2, 2024, Palestinian and UN officials reported that more than 80,000 children had been vaccinated on the first day of a vaccination campaign in central Gaza.
The first case of polio in the region was reported on August 16. Hamas and Israel agreed to a temporary cessation of hostilities to vaccinate some 640,000 children against polio. According to the WHO, about 87,000 children were vaccinated on the first day. UNRWA continues efforts to provide children with the vaccine, but is particularly in need of a ceasefire, the agency said.
The Palestinian territory's Health Ministry earlier said more than 40,000 Palestinians had been killed and more than 92,000 wounded in the war between Israel and Hamas.
