Iranian President asks Pope Francis to help end the war in the Middle East

On November 20, 2024, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian asked Pope Francis to use his influence with Christian governments to end the war in the Middle East.

According to him, world leaders, in particular Christian governments, must be persuaded to “stop Israeli aggression.” Pezeshkian's message was announced by the Iranian delegation at an event on religion in the Vatican.

A week ago, Pope Francis proposed examining “whether Israel's military campaign in Gaza constitutes genocide of the Palestinian people,” one of his prominent criticisms of Israel.

Media reported that a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah was approaching, while Lebanon and Hezbollah agreed to a US proposal for a ceasefire with Israel. It was also noted that Hezbollah has large stockpiles of Russian weapons. They hope for a ceasefire in Lebanon if Israel does not “maneuver.”
