Israel's Supreme Court has rejected a request to suspend Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu from office while he testifies in Case 1000. The judges concluded that being a witness did not disqualify him from performing his duties. However, testifying can be difficult, Judge Ruth Ronen said.
Judge Alex Stein added that this was more of a political statement than a legal claim. The initiators of the lawsuit argued that the prime minister would not be able to combine his duties and testifying. Netanyahu has rejected the allegations, saying the attempt to use the judiciary for political purposes is illegal.
The court is currently considering Netanyahu's request to reduce the days for testifying. Testimony is scheduled to begin on December 10. Minister Dodi Amsalem warned of the possibility of civil war if Netanyahu is removed from office.
