UN expects 1 million Syrian refugees to return to Syria by 2025

A UN refugee agency spokesman said today that an estimated 1 million Syrian refugees will return to the country in the first six months of 2025 and asked states not to force them to do so.

The overthrow of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad this month raised the possibility of the return of some of the millions of people who fled the country during the 13-year civil war, Reuters reports.

“Today we estimate that approximately 1 million Syrians will return between January and June next year, and so we have discussed this plan with donors, asking for their support,” said Rema Jamous Imseis, director of the UN Office for the Near East and North. Africa.

She also stressed that countries should give Syrian refugees time to decide whether to return.

“It is important to maintain protection for Syrians who have already found refuge in host countries and prevent them from being forcibly returned to Syria,” she added.

The UN Special Representative for Syria previously said European countries should not rush to repatriate Syrian refugees after the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad's government and asked foreign players, including Israel, not to intervene militarily. Returning home remains problematic for many Syrians due to insufficient livelihood security.
