Polygamy has been allowed in Russia, but there are certain conditions and restrictions associated with it

Only Muslims can have multiple wives, and only unofficially. Russians are allowed to marry four, but only according to Muslim rites. The decision was made by the Council of Ulema of the Spiritual Administration of Muslims of Russia, as reported by the Mufti of Moscow Ildar Alyautdinov. Russian Muslims are allowed to enter into up to four “religious marriages.”

A polygamist requires fair treatment of all wives, financial support and separate housing. Women must agree to polygamous marriage. The inability of a spouse to bear children or other objective reasons may be acceptable for additional marriages.

The Family Code of the Russian Federation prohibits polygamous marriages, but there are no penalties for violating this norm. Therefore, the Ulema Council recognized that the rights of women in only religious marriages would not be protected.
