Due to a plane crash in Kazakhstan, foreign airlines are canceling their flights to the Russian Federation

On Friday, December 27, 2024, several Russian airports temporarily suspended their operations, introducing the “Carpet” plan. The restrictions were introduced to ensure the safety of civil aircraft. Airports where operations have been suspended include Sochi, Kazan, Astrakhan and Volgograd. This information was reported by the Russian Telegram channel “Baza”.

In addition to Russian airports, it is also noted that foreign airlines began to cancel their flights to Russia after the Embraer disaster in Kazakhstan. In this regard, two foreign companies decided to cancel flights to the Russian Federation.

The Kazakh airline QAZAQ AIR has temporarily suspended flights on the Astana-Ekaterinburg route to ensure the safety of passengers and crew. Flights on this route were canceled from December 28 to January 27, 2025. A QAZAQ AIR press release notes that this decision was made to ensure the safety of flights to Russia.

Interestingly, flights to Omsk and Novosibirsk remain on the airline’s schedule, and passengers were promised a refund for canceled flights. In addition, the Israeli airline El Al announced a temporary suspension of flights from Tel Aviv to Moscow for a week. After this, experts will make a decision on resuming flights.

On Wednesday, December 25, an Embraer 190 passenger plane of the Azerbaijani airline AZAL crashed near Aktau in Kazakhstan. The transcript of crew conversations indicates a possible downing of the plane by Russian air defense systems. According to Reuters, Azerbaijan expects the Russian Federation to admit to downing the plane.

It is also known that the Azerbaijan Airlines plane, flying from Baku to Minvody, was forced to return due to the closure of the airspace over Makhachkala.
