A workshop discovered in southern Israel has presented unique evidence of ancient craftsmanship. For the first time in this region, long flint blades and large stone tools were found, which were used to produce and process weapons with high precision.

During the excavations, numerous underground pits were also revealed, some of which were lined with clay bricks. These structures could have served as storage facilities, dwellings, workshops, or even ritual spaces. The scale of this complex indicates that the Canaanites had organized settlements and developed craft specialties, as well as active trade.

According to the Israel Antiquities Authority, among the finds are large flint cores from which sharp and uniform blades were made. These tools were used not only for cutting and processing meat but also as sickles for harvesting. The production process was characterized by a high level of complexity, including the use of a special device for precise pressure on the flint. This technology is unique for the era.

Dr. Yakov Vardi, a researcher from the IAA, commented: “This is a complex industry. Interestingly, the production waste is not scattered across the territory, possibly to preserve professional knowledge within a group of craftsmen.” According to him, the workshop was a center from which Canaanite blades were distributed throughout the Levant region.

At the time this workshop was operational, tools were made from natural materials such as flint, bone, stone, and ceramics. Canaanite blades were the primary cutting tools of the Early Bronze Age. Archaeologists noted that the found items correspond to the material culture of Canaan during the period of Abraham, approximately 2100−1900 BCE. It was then, according to the Bible, that Abraham moved to Canaan.

The Canaanites are also mentioned in various biblical texts, including the Book of Genesis and the Book of Joshua, where in 3:10 it is stated that God promises the expulsion of the Canaanites before the Israelites enter the Promised Land. Ultimately, the Israelites occupied most of the Canaanite lands in the second half of the 13th century BCE.
