On August 27, 2025, the United States authorities conducted a mass deportation, sending between 30 to 60 Russian citizens back to their homeland. Primarily, these were Russians who were in immigration prisons and failed to obtain asylum after losing court cases. Some of them decided on self-deportation, returning home without waiting for court proceedings.

This information was confirmed by Dmitry Valuyev, president of Russian America for Democracy in Russia, as well as by Gulagu.net founder Vladimir Osechkin. Some relatives of the deported also reported the incident.

Among others, those deported included individuals fearing persecution for their political views. One of the deported was a former military serviceman accused of unauthorized absence from his unit, who also failed to achieve a favorable court decision.

According to Valuyev, the Russians were deported via Egypt. During a layover in Cairo, several people attempted to change their route to avoid returning to Moscow but were stopped and beaten by Egyptian special services officers. Ultimately, all were placed on a flight to the Russian capital.

The plane landed in Domodedovo, and apparently, Russian border guards were informed in advance about the arrival. At the checkpoint, lengthy conversations were held with the deportees, detaining one of them. According to an organization familiar with the situation, only ten of those deported remained under surveillance, while the rest were released, although some were let go under a travel restriction.

Vladimir Osechkin reported that the deported undergo so-called “filtering,” accompanied by interrogations using pressure, and some are subjected to physical force. Moreover, information about coercing the deported to cooperate with the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the FSB raises concerns. According to available data, several people were detained, and investigations under criminal articles were initiated against seven.

Some relatives of Russians remaining in the U.S. dispute Osechkin’s statement, claiming that his information is inaccurate, but independent confirmations are not yet available.

Regarding migration issues, Russians, like Ukrainians, attempt to flee to the U.S. through Mexico. According to Valuyev, Russian citizens, even in wartime conditions, continue to be deported, but usually in small groups. Previously, there was an opportunity to change the destination country to avoid returning to Moscow.

In July 2025, it became known about the deportation of Perm activist Leonid Melekhin. This occurred after the activist was repeatedly detained for participating in protests. Melekhin, who requested political asylum after crossing the border, was ultimately deported and arrested in Russia.

The mass deportation on August 27 was the second-largest since June, when about 40 people were deported from the U.S. For security reasons, according to Valuyev, further deportations of Russian citizens may occur in the near future.
