On September 20, 2025, a military parade called “The Power of Unity” took place in Belgrade. The event attracted the attention not only of residents but also of international media, noting the diversity of military equipment.

Parade in Belgrade: Demonstration of Strength or a Way to Retain Power?

The parade featured 10,000 military personnel who marched through the streets of New Belgrade, accompanied by a display of military equipment. In addition to Russian-made tanks, anti-aircraft systems from China, drones from the United Arab Emirates, and French multipurpose Rafale fighters ordered by Serbia in a quantity of only 12 units were demonstrated. Serbian-made equipment also attracted the attention of those present.

Officials played on patriotic feelings, calling the event “the largest demonstration of strength” of the country’s army. President Aleksandar Vučić emphasized at the ceremony that the parade underscores Serbia’s ability to defend itself and serves as a deterrent against potential aggressors.

Opposition and Protests

Nevertheless, the opposition was skeptical of such a demonstrative event for the people. In their opinion, the parade is not a proper demonstration of military power but merely a tool for strengthening Vučić’s power vertical. Critics argue that such events distract the population from more pressing issues facing the country.

It should be noted that students from several universities and opposition supporters, who actively conducted anti-government actions amid growing discontent, were not allowed to attend the parade.

Background and Consequences

The parade takes place against the backdrop of a wave of protests that began after the tragedy on November 1, 2024, when part of the roof of the railway station collapsed, claiming the lives of 16 people. Discontent is fueled by unanswered questions about those responsible for the incident, which continuously stirs passions in society.

Investigations and New Arrests

  • On August 1, 2025, it became known about the arrest of six former officials whose actions became the subject of an investigation related to financial machinations during the railway reconstruction, which led to the roof collapse.
  • On August 15, anti-government protests took place, during which participants damaged the office of the ruling party – this clearly demonstrates the level of citizens’ discontent.

Conclusions

Thus, the military parade in Belgrade became not only a demonstration of strength but also a reflection of the deeply unstable political situation in Serbia, where issues of social justice and responsibility for tragic events are at the center of public attention.
