Every September, thousands of Hasidic pilgrims travel to Uman, despite the war. This year was no exception, and believers continue to seek spiritual purification in this holy place.

Hasidism is a mystical branch of Judaism that originated in the 18th century on Ukrainian lands. Its founder, Baal Shem Tov (Israel ben Eliezer), lived in the village of Okopy, which is now in the Ternopil region. The word “Hasid” translates from Hebrew as “pious.” The main principles of Hasidism are immersion in Kabbalah and joyful service to God.

The Essence of Hasidism

Currently, Hasidism is present in different parts of the world, but its center remains Ukraine. Among the largest Hasidic communities are those in the USA, Israel, and the United Kingdom. Uman, in turn, is considered a special holy place for many believers.

Pilgrimage to Uman

Uman became holy for the Hasidim after the relocation of Tzadik Nachman of Breslov, who chose this place for his burial at the end of his life. He was the great-grandson of the founder of the teaching and left his followers the commandment to come to his grave every year. His last sermon took place on Rosh Hashanah, and it was then that Nachman urged his followers to gather annually at his burial site.

Uman became a center of pilgrimage and a symbol of true faith for the Hasidim, especially important during the holidays. Despite current difficulties, they perceive their trips as fulfilling a religious duty.
