On October 25, 2025, in the Kemerovo region of Russia, a car explosion occurred involving Lieutenant Colonel Veniamin Mazherin, an officer of the special unit OMON “Obereg” of the Russian National Guard. This information was received from the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine (GUR).

The “Obereg” unit has already become known for its involvement in war crimes against the Ukrainian people during the full-scale invasion from February to March 2022. GUR reports that based on collected data and witness testimonies, the Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine has initiated criminal cases against the soldiers of this unit for violations of the laws and customs of war.

Identification of War Criminals by Name

Ukrainian military intelligence began identifying criminals from “Obereg” back in April 2022. GUR emphasizes that for each of these actions, the Ukrainian people will receive fair retribution. The agency also posted a video of the elimination of Lieutenant Colonel Mazherin, including footage of the interaction of Russian forces with the Ukrainian population at the beginning of 2022.

During the five weeks of occupation in Bucha, 458 civilians died, among whom 419 were shot or died from torture. This city became a symbol of the horrors committed by Russian troops.

Elimination and Its Consequences

As indicated in the GUR video, Ukrainian intelligence tracked Mazherin on one of the highways in the Kemerovo region, where his car was blown up. As a result, the “liberator” was killed. The video concludes with a fragment of an interview with the head of GUR, Lieutenant General Kyrylo Budanov.

Budanov noted the necessity of fair punishment for those who committed crimes: “In any country in the world, such people will eventually face deserved punishment. The deserved punishment for such acts can only be elimination. I consider nothing else.”

Names of Russian Officers

At the end of September, the British newspaper The Sunday Times published a list of 13 Russian officers suspected of serious war crimes related to the events in Bucha in the spring of 2022. The data was collected by independent lawyers and researchers and confirmed by Ukrainian special services.

It is known that under the command of these 13 officers were more than 80 soldiers, also suspected of crimes. In particular, paratroopers from the 234th Guards Regiment, as well as from the 76th, 35th, and 36th Guards Armies, operated in Bucha.
