The Ukrainian Defense Forces recorded a rare episode for modern warfare: an Iranian strike drone Shahed-107 was destroyed in the air by a Ukrainian interceptor drone. The operation was conducted by fighters of the Sky Wars unit of the 47th Mechanized Brigade “Magura,” using the STING interceptor.
The interception video on January 24, 2026, was published by the Ukrainian company Wild Hornets, the developer and manufacturer of the STING system. These frames became one of the few publicly confirmed cases where the Shahed-107 was neutralized not by ground-based air defense systems, but by another drone.
According to the military, the operation lasted about six hours. During this time, the Sky Wars unit destroyed 22 aerial targets, including the Iranian strike UAV. This is about systematic work under conditions of intensive use of drones by the enemy, not a single episode.
What is known about the Shahed-107
The Shahed-107 was first publicly presented by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in June 2015 — against the backdrop of escalating tensions between Iran and Israel. Later, this type of drone was also recorded in the possession of Russian troops, which became another confirmation of the close military cooperation between Moscow and Tehran.
According to data from the Main Intelligence Directorate of Ukraine, the Shahed-107 belongs to the class of high-wing aircraft. The wingspan is about three meters, and the tail assembly is made in an X-shaped scheme, which increases the stability of the device during long flights.
The drone’s body is made of carbon fiber, and the structural power elements are made of aluminum. This combination reduces weight while simultaneously increasing strength. In the sample examined by Ukrainian intelligence, a cumulative fragmentation warhead weighing about 15 kilograms was found — enough to hit both infrastructure objects and fortified targets.
The power plant is a two-stroke gasoline engine DLE 111 of Chinese production. Similar small-displacement engines were previously recorded on other Russian UAVs, including the “Gerbera,” BM-35, “Parody,” and “Delta,” indicating a common supply chain of components. The fuel tank capacity is 28 liters, providing an estimated flight range of the Shahed-107 up to 300 kilometers.
Ukrainian STING and the new air defense logic
The interception was carried out by the STING drone — a Ukrainian development created specifically to combat enemy drones. These devices are used by mobile interception groups that detect the target, accompany it, and destroy it directly in the air.
The key advantage of this approach is economic and tactical. The interceptor drone is significantly cheaper than missile air defense systems and allows reducing the load on ground-based air defense, preserving it for more complex targets. Essentially, Ukraine is forming an additional level of air defense, adapted to the mass use of cheap enemy strike drones.
The destruction of the Shahed-107 is not just a successful combat episode.
