Rain in the middle of August in Israel sounds almost like a forecast error. In the midst of the most stable and dry period of the year, when the country is experiencing heavy and sometimes extreme heat loads, meteorologists are predicting a completely different picture: on Friday, August 14, 2026, drizzle and local rain are possible in the north and center of Israel.

It’s not yet about showers, thunderstorms, or a full-fledged rain system. The current forecast from the Israel Meteorological Service indicates that Friday will be partly cloudy, the temperature will drop slightly and return to the seasonal norm, the heat will weaken, and drizzle and local, mostly light rain are possible in the north and center. The forecast was updated on the morning of August 11.

And yet the combination of “rain + Israel + August” itself deserves a separate explanation. Why can the country live for weeks next to the warm Mediterranean Sea, experience very high humidity — and yet practically not receive rain? And what must change in the atmosphere for a few August drops to even reach the ground?

This is where the current forecast becomes more interesting than the usual weather report.

What will change by Friday

On Tuesday, August 11, the Israel Meteorological Service maintains warnings of heavy and extreme heat loads in various regions of the country. On Wednesday, the temperature should drop slightly, primarily in the mountains and inland areas, but it will still remain hotter than usual there. Cooling will continue on Thursday.

A turning point is expected on Friday, August 14. The temperature should return approximately to seasonal values, and the heat load will decrease. At the same time, the forecast allows for drizzle or light local rain in the north and center of the country.

Here it is important to draw a line, without which a catchy headline easily turns into an exaggeration. The forecast says “possible”, not “definitely will happen”. Moreover, it is mainly about light local precipitation. This does not mean that autumn has suddenly arrived in Israel or that the rainy season is beginning.

But it is the time of year that makes even such a forecast unusual.

Why it almost never rains in Israel in summer

Israel is located in a Mediterranean climate zone with a very clear division of seasons: the bulk of precipitation falls in the cold part of the year, and summer becomes a prolonged dry period. The Israel Meteorological Service notes that about two-thirds of the annual precipitation falls only in December, January, and February, and the remaining significant part — in the transitional seasons. Very little is left for summer.

The reason is not just that it’s hot in summer.

For rain, humid air is not enough. The air needs to be able to rise high enough, cool, condense, and form clouds of great vertical power. In Israeli August, the atmospheric system does almost the opposite most of the time.

In summer, the Eastern Mediterranean is under the influence of very stable circulation. At the surface, a so-called Persian trough forms — the western extension of a huge low-pressure system associated with the Asian and Indian summer monsoon. Therefore, in summer, the weather here may seem paradoxical.

The Mediterranean Sea supplies a huge amount of moisture. On the coast of Tel Aviv, Haifa, Netanya, or Ashdod, the air at night and in the morning can be literally saturated with moisture. But humidity alone does not yet create rain.

Why high humidity in Tel Aviv doesn’t turn into clouds

Above the humid lower layer of air in summer, there is a kind of atmospheric “lid”.

A study of summer rains in Israel, published in the International Journal of Climatology, describes the mechanism quite accurately: over the Eastern Mediterranean in summer, there is a stable descent of air in the upper layers of the atmosphere. At the same time, cooler sea air enters below. Between these layers, a stable temperature barrier — an inversion — arises, which prevents clouds from developing upwards.

Simply put, imagine a pot with a lid.

Below there is heat and moisture. The air tries to rise, but it is difficult for it to pass a certain height. Small low clouds form, sometimes morning cloudiness, but they cannot grow into high powerful rain clouds.

That is why an Israeli in August can go outside in the morning, see clouds, feel very high humidity, complain about the heavy air — and a few hours later get a completely clear sky and not a single drop.

By this time, the Persian trough and the associated summer flows already have a stable influence on the region, and over the Eastern Mediterranean, a subtropical circulation with air descent in the middle and upper troposphere is maintained. This combination supports the inversion and hinders deep convection — the vertical rise of humid air necessary for the formation of significant rain. Studies of the summer synoptic situation in the Levant call the Persian trough the dominant system of the season.

Moreover, the Mediterranean Sea is already very warm by August. It would seem that warm water should help the formation of rains. In practice, it primarily increases the amount of moisture in the very lowest layer of the atmosphere.

Hence the familiar August stuffiness for coastal residents.

There is a lot of moisture — but there is usually no mechanism capable of lifting it high and building a powerful rain cloud.

So, is rain in August really unique?

Here an important caveat is required.

If by “rain” we mean a few drops, a short drizzle, or a very weak local episode, then such an event cannot be called absolutely unique. The Israel Meteorological Service directly indicates: drizzle or light rain is observed almost annually in July and August.

But there is a huge difference between a few drops and a real measurable summer rain.

According to the Israel Meteorological Service, in about a hundred years of observations, there have been only 11 years when in July or August at least one of Israel’s stations recorded precipitation reaching 10 mm. Five of these years occurred after 2006.

This is where the word “rarity” takes on a completely different meaning.

The most unusual example cited by the meteorological service occurred in July 1995. Then it rained in Israel for four consecutive days, and in the area of Haifa University, a total of 33.5 mm of precipitation fell. For the central part of the Israeli summer, this is indeed an exceptional episode.

Therefore, it is more correct to separate two events:

a few drops or drizzle in summer — unusual for a person, but known to climatologists;

noticeable rain with measurable precipitation — already a truly rare event for July and August.

Why rain sometimes breaks through the August “lid”

The summer atmospheric system is very stable, but it is not absolutely immobile.

For summer rain to appear in Israel, the usual atmospheric structure must at least temporarily be disrupted. The temperature inversion may weaken, the direction of flows may change, the thickness of the moist layer may increase, or colder air may appear higher above the region. Then the air gets the opportunity to rise higher than usual, and small clouds can develop more strongly.

Scientific observations of summer rains in Israel show that such episodes do occur, mainly in the northern half of the country. But they are exceptions to the main summer regime, not its normal continuation.

And this helps to understand the forecast for August 14. Meteorologists do not yet see a powerful winter rain system. Rather, it is about a small temporary disruption of the usual summer stability, which may be enough for drizzle or local light precipitation.

Not autumn in the middle of August

There is a temptation to see an early end to summer in the Friday forecast. Climatically, there is no basis for this now.

August remains August. The temperature is only returning approximately to the seasonal norm, and the forecasted precipitation is local and mostly light. After such an episode, the summer regime can quite quickly recover.

Therefore, residents of the north and center of Israel should not expect a prolonged rainy day. It is much more accurate to imagine a short drizzle, isolated local precipitation, or a situation where it rains for a few minutes in one city, while in a neighboring area the ground remains completely dry.

And since there are still a few days until Friday, the forecast may still be adjusted. For weak local precipitation, even a small change in humidity, wind, or inversion height can determine whether the drops reach the surface or remain only clouds.

From the search word “rain” — to the climate of Israel

The very attention to the word “rain” in mid-August shows how unusual it sounds for Israel at this time of year.

We are used to considering the absence of summer precipitation as something obvious: it’s hot — so there’s no rain. In fact, the mechanism is much more interesting. Even over a very warm sea and with high humidity, the atmosphere can remain so stable that it practically completely blocks the development of rain clouds.

August demonstrates this mechanism best.

Therefore, the Friday rain, if it indeed occurs, is not interesting for the amount of water. Perhaps there will be very little of it. What is interesting is something else: for a short time, one of the most stable seasonal atmospheric systems in Israel will allow moisture to pass through the usual summer barrier.
