US President Joe Biden said they were closer than ever to a ceasefire in Gaza, but said no deal had been reached because peace talks were suspended until next week, Reuters reported.

Biden expressed cautious optimism, telling reporters in the White House Oval Office: “I don't want to jinx it… we can get something done. But we're not there yet. It's much, much closer than it was three days ago. So keep your fingers crossed.”

On August 16, Doha hosted a second day of talks on a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. A US official who anonymously provided information to Reuters about the talks in the Qatari capital described them as “constructive.” However, Hamas representatives did not participate in the talks.
