US Secretary of State Antony Blinken continues efforts to reach a ceasefire agreement in Gaza. His last visit to Israel was on August 18, following two days of talks in Doha to broker a ceasefire since the war began on October 7, 2023.
The agreement is in the final stretch, with US officials hoping to have it signed by the end of next week.
Blinken plans to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to discuss the full details of the agreement. Further talks are planned in Cairo, with working groups remaining on site in Doha. The Biden administration official is confident that “there is now an agreement that can be implemented and moved forward.”
Hamas officials have voiced concerns about the talks, calling signs of progress an “illusion” and suspecting that it could be an attempt by the United States to interfere. Israel’s conflict with Gaza dates back to 1948 and continues to this day. Israel captured Gaza after the 1967 Six-Day War, and the conflict has remained unresolved since then, leading to frequent periods of tension.
