On the eighth day of Hanukkah, the Chief Rabbi of Ukraine Moshe Azman visited Israeli soldiers serving on the borders with Lebanon and Syria.
This is not just an ordinary meeting, but an event filled with deep symbolism. After all, it is on the front line, where people risk their lives every day, that the light of Hanukkah candles takes on special meaning.
As noted Rabbi Azman:
“Hanukkah reminds us that even one candle can drive away the darkness. And when this light unites faith and courage, it becomes irresistible.”
What are mitzvo tanks?
Moshe Azman did not arrive to the Israeli soldiers alone. Along with him were the so-called mitzvo tanks – mobile centers of Jewish commandments. These unique mobile sites travel around the world to inspire Jewish tradition, strengthen their faith, and show that Jewish spirituality can be a part of life even in the most challenging environments.
Mitzvo tanks have become a symbol of support, unification and Jewish solidarity.
Special mission on the borders with Lebanon and Syria
These borders are not only strategic, but also extremely tense points. Every day, soldiers defending Israeli territory face threats from terrorist organizations. At such moments, the support of the rabbi, as well as the lit Chanukah candles, become a source of inspiration and moral strength.
Symbolism of Hanukkah and meaning for the Jewish community
Hanukkah symbolizes the victory of light over darkness, hope over fear. The tradition of lighting candles during the holiday reminds us of the importance of unity and spirituality.
Chief Rabbi of Ukraine Moshe Azman emphasized that the light of Hanukkah has a universal meaning:
“Our faith helps us overcome any challenge. It is the light of Hanukkah that gives strength to us all—soldiers, communities, every person.”
Jewish community of Ukraine and Israel: unity in difficult times
Rabbi Asman's support for Jewish soldiers symbolizes the strengthening of relations between Ukraine and Israel. This event was another reminder that despite all the trials, the Jewish communities of the two countries remain united.
