A diplomatic team from Western countries has begun working to free Israeli Elizaveta Tsurkova, who was kidnapped in Baghdad in March 2023 and held by pro-Iranian militias. Negotiations are ongoing with various Iraqi political figures, and contact with the kidnappers is being established through intermediaries, although there is no information about Tsurkova's condition and life.
In July, it was revealed that Tsurkova, a citizen of Israel and Russia and a doctoral student at Princeton University, was being held by Shiite militias in Iraq.
The appeal to Iraq notes that responsibility for its security lies with the country. Tsurkova is engaged in research of the Middle East, has knowledge of Hebrew and Arabic, and came to Iraq for scientific work on a Russian passport.
