The Ziv Medical Center said the child infected with the “brain-eating” amoeba remains in serious condition. He contracted Naegleria fowleri last week at the Gai Beach water park in Tiberias. This is the second case of infection at the beach, where a 25-year-old man died in early July.
The Health Ministry ordered the park closed after the discovery of a second case. Inspectors found no initial signs of amoeba infection after the first case. Mortality from amoebic brain infection is extremely high, although such cases are rare, but often fatal.
In August 2022, a 36-year-old man died of amoebic meningoencephalitis caused by the same amoeba. This is the third recorded case in Israel, and there are only about 400 confirmed cases of this dangerous infection in the world.
