On August 14, 2024, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan met in Ankara to discuss a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. Erdogan condemned the West's “silence in the face of the growing death toll” in Gaza, stressing the need to take steps to stop the violence and deliver humanitarian aid, France 24 reported, citing UNN.

The presidents discussed “the massacres committed by Israel in the Palestinian territories” and discussed steps toward a permanent ceasefire. Erdogan expressed disappointment at the silence of some Western countries as the death toll in Gaza mounted, calling the attitude “unacceptable.”

The presidents also discussed Israel's actions during the war, which was triggered by Hamas attacks on October 7. Erdogan called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu “the butcher of Gaza” and called for greater efforts to achieve peace and end the violence.

A ceasefire in Gaza was also discussed by former US President Trump with Netanyahu ahead of key talks in Doha involving the US, Qatar, Egypt and Israel. Erdogan expressed dissatisfaction with the silence of some countries on efforts to achieve a ceasefire and provide humanitarian aid to the Palestinians.
