Details about the complex joint IDF-Shabaq operation to rescue hostage Farhan al-Qadi remain a military secret, but journalists are gradually revealing new details. The New York Times correspondent, Aaron Boxerman, citing “senior Israeli sources,” reported that al-Qadi was discovered by chance during an operation to destroy Hamas tunnels in Rafah.
According to sources, he was found 25 meters below ground in one of the underground rooms, where he was alone, with no guards nearby. Boxerman also noted that, unlike previous rescue operations, there was no bombing in the area this time, and it is not known whether there were any fatalities.
Earlier, Haaretz military correspondent Yaniv Kubowitz reported that Farhan al-Qadi managed to escape from his guards and independently contact Israeli soldiers. The IDF continues to publish videos and photos, but they were taken after al-Qadi was brought to Israel.
Transport Minister Miri Regev accidentally violated military censorship by posting classified information about an ongoing operation on social media, effectively declassifying it. Regev deleted the tweet half an hour later, Wallanews reports.
According to an official IDF press release, Farhan al-Qadi was rescued in a complex joint operation involving the Shin Bet and several IDF units, including the Shaetet 13 naval commando unit. Previously, similar IDF and Shin Bet operations saved the lives of seven Israelis kidnapped by Hamas, and more than 100 hostages were returned home as part of the exchange.
Meanwhile, Hamas publics claim that al-Qadi was “voluntarily released” by the kidnappers. However, Hamas did not release a single Muslim kidnapped on October 7 voluntarily, as they remain a valuable resource for the terrorists.
Farhan Kadi was taken to a hospital in Israel. His family greeted him with joy and relief. What is especially significant is that Farhan is an Arab Muslim, and his release confirms the importance to the Israeli military of all citizens of the country, regardless of religion or ethnicity.
The family reported that Farhan, despite significant weight loss, is generally healthy and close to his loved ones. Farhan's brother expressed a difficult-to-describe feeling: “It's like being born again.” The rescue operation was carried out by the IDF and Shin Bet, and Farhan is now free from Hamas captivity.
Farhan's health is assessed as satisfactory and he was examined in hospital. The release process demonstrated the importance and value that Israel attaches to the safety of its citizens, regardless of their religion or origin.
