A survey conducted in France in September 2024 found that about one in five French people under 35 and 12% of the country's total population would be happy if Jews left France. More than half of respondents believe that Jews are more loyal to Israel than to France and that “the Jewish lobby has influence on the government.” It was also noted that some young French people believe that Jews are not integrating into the country’s society.
However, there are also positive aspects: the majority of French citizens (75%) have a favorable attitude towards the Jewish people. Only 6% of French people recognize Hamas as a terrorist organization, and 77% believe it is. Half of those surveyed support the Palestinians, but only 6% expressed sympathy for Hamas. It is noted that the French make a distinction between the people of Israel and the government of the country, and the support of the people is higher.
Regarding the discussion of Israel's right to self-defense, 52% of respondents believe that this is a legitimate practice, given the country's surrounded by hostile states. However, 87% believe that both sides are responsible for the situation of civilians in Gaza. Overall, the survey reflects a complex picture of relations between French society, Jews, Israel and Palestine.
