In an interview with Israeli TV, Amos Hochstein noted that ideas about resolving the conflict with Lebanon are “fantasies.” He denied rumors about US pressure on Israel and the possible adoption of a UN resolution if the proposed agreement is rejected. The American diplomat also said that he did not issue ultimatums and did not make “now or never” demands.
Hochstein clarified that there will never be an agreement on the creation of a buffer zone in Lebanon, as this would mean the occupation of the territory of another state. He stressed that Israel will not sign such agreements. Answering a question about the new agreement, the diplomat noted that the previous UN resolution was not implemented due to the lack of a control mechanism.
A US-led structure is being created that will assist the Lebanese army and monitor compliance with the terms of the agreement. This will be a permanent mechanism, not temporary. The ceasefire was initiated by Prime Minister Netanyahu, who called the White House at the end of October.
Hochstein also noted that the United States supports Israel internationally, which is a strength of American diplomacy. This became known in an online interview with representatives of the US Jewish community.
