In the last week of September, two tankers were attacked by the Houthis in the Red Sea – the Saudi-flagged Amjad and the Panama-flagged Blue Lagoon I. Both vessels were carrying crude oil, with the Blue Lagoon I clearly carrying Russian crude from the port of Ust-Luga. The Houthis claimed responsibility for the attack on the Blue Lagoon, using missiles and drones.

What was not mentioned, however, was the attack on the Saudi tanker Amjad. Both vessels, despite the strikes, continued sailing without serious damage. The Amjad was carrying about two million barrels of oil, and the Blue Lagoon I was carrying one million barrels. According to Marine Traffic, the Blue Lagoon I is still in the Red Sea.

The Houthis have targeted the tankers, allegedly because they were calling at Israeli ports. Saudi Arabia is worried about Houthi missile attacks on ships in the Red Sea as it seeks to end the war in Yemen and end its feud with Iran, the Houthis' main backer. The Houthis began launching air and missile strikes against shipping lanes last November.

The Joint Maritime Information Center said the Houthis fired three ballistic missiles at the Blue Lagoon I tanker 70 nautical miles northwest of Yemen's Salif port. Video released by the Houthis showed explosions aboard the Greek oil tanker Sounion, which they attacked in late August.
