According to Pentagon press secretary Major General Pet Ryder, the American and Israeli ministers discussed “security developments and Israeli military actions.”
During the call, Austin reaffirmed Washington's support for Israel's right “to defend itself against Iran, Lebanese Hezbollah, Hamas and other Iranian-backed terrorist groups.”
The Pentagon said the two sides agreed on the need to destroy attack infrastructure along the border to prevent possible Hezbollah attacks on northern Israel, similar to the Hamas attack last year.
Austin also stressed the importance of a diplomatic solution for the safe return of citizens to their homes on both sides of the border.
Austin also said the United States is committed to protecting its personnel, partners and allies from threats from Iran and its supported terrorist organizations.
“The Secretary and Secretary Gallant discussed the possible consequences for Iran if the country decides to launch a military attack on Israel,” the US department said.
