The past year in Israel was marked by a sharp increase in the number of emigrants from the country due to protests against judicial reform and the outbreak of conflict with Hamas. According to the Central Bureau of Statistics, Israel ended the year with a negative migration balance, with the number of those leaving for a long period exceeding the number of those returning by 27.5 thousand.
Over the past decade, the average annual emigration from Israel was 16,000 people, but in 2023 this figure increased to 36,000. Compared to the previous year, the number of those leaving for a long period increased by 46.4%, which indicates a significant change in migration trends.
Last year, the pandemic almost equalized the number of people leaving and returning due to the relatively favorable situation in Israel. However, in 2022, the gap widened, and in 2023 it became even greater. The peak of emigration occurred in the summer during protests against judicial reform, when thousands of people took to the streets.
