On September 21, 2025, the recognition of the Palestinian state by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is expected in London. Despite resistance from Israel and negative perception from the USA, Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy emphasizes that this is a step towards a peace process that should lead to the creation of two states, reports Reuters.

Prospects for the Peace Process

Lammy stated:

.......

“Every step towards the recognition of the Palestinian state is aimed at preserving opportunities for a two-state solution.”

This statement was made against the backdrop of discussions about the situation in the region during the UN General Assembly.

It is expected that in the coming days, a number of Western countries, such as France, Canada, Australia, and Belgium, will also recognize Palestine. Such a step signifies a new wave of diplomatic changes in relations with Israel.

Situation in the Region

During the summer, Starmer noted that the recognition of Palestine would only be possible under certain conditions: Israel must achieve a ceasefire with Hamas, provide humanitarian aid to Gaza, and refrain from annexations of the West Bank. Another condition was the pursuit of a peace process that would ensure the creation of two states. However, according to Lammy, another attack on Qatar was recently added, and the prospects for a peaceful settlement now look doubtful.

When asked whether the recognition of Palestine would be positive news for Hamas, the Deputy Prime Minister noted the need to distinguish “between the radical group and the Palestinian people themselves.”
