Iran's Grand Ayatollah Khamenei said the killing of Hamas chief Haniyeh in Tehran had “paved the way for Israel to punish him harshly.” He also said Iran must avenge the attack on Haniyeh and intends to save face by making the attackers pay a heavy price for their crimes. Masoud Pezeshkian, Iran's new president, reiterated the statement when he was sworn in.

According to media reports, shortly before Haniyeh's assassination, he celebrated the beginning of his term as head of the executive branch. These events took place in the context of worsening relations between Iran and Israel. It is not yet clear how further actions by both countries will develop and what consequences this may have for the region as a whole.
