On the evening of Friday, September 27, 2024, the IDF attacked Hezbollah's central headquarters, which was located in a residential building in the Dahiya district of Beirut. This was reported by the army press secretary. Shortly before the official announcement, footage of powerful explosions in the area appeared on social networks.
The IDF press office also stated that there are no new instructions from the Logistics Command yet, but if necessary, the population will be notified of new recommendations.
According to Ynet, Benjamin Netanyahu quickly left a press conference after speaking at the UN General Assembly when his military secretary Roman Hoffman informed him of the attack on Beirut. This happened in front of many witnesses, after which the Prime Minister immediately left the hall without commenting to reporters.
According to Ynet, the United States was informed in advance about the attack on Hezbollah headquarters. At the time of the attack, Defense Minister Yoav Galant, Chief of the General Staff Herzi Halevi and IDF Air Force Commander Tomer Bar were present in the situation center of the Israeli Ministry of Defense.
International news agencies, citing sources in Hezbollah, report that its leader Hassan Nasrallah is alive and safe. Reuters confirmed this information, noting that similar data had previously been reported by Al-Arabiya, Sky News and the Iranian Tasnim agency. Iran has so far been cautious in its statements: a government source told Reuters that Tehran is “verifying information about Nasrallah’s condition.” The Hezbollah leader himself has not yet commented on what happened; his last post on social networks was made 9 hours ago.
In addition, Hezbollah said that Safi al-Din, the organization's second-highest leader, is also alive, despite rumors of his death. This was also confirmed by Reuters.
Israeli sources claim that Hassan Nasrallah was the target of the strike. The rear command has not yet changed its instructions, and the IDF General Staff, led by Herzi Halevi, emphasized the army’s readiness to act on all fronts.
Meanwhile, Tel Aviv City Hall has ordered the opening of public bomb shelters, and Israeli media continue to question Netanyahu's office about whether the prime minister intends to return to Israel by the end of Saturday. There have been no official answers to this question for more than an hour.
In the evening, the Prime Minister's Office announced that Netanyahu would interrupt his visit to the United States and fly to Israel at night, but not urgently – his flight was scheduled for 5 a.m. Israeli time.
At a meeting at the UN, Netanyahu said that since the Hamas invasion, Israel has been fighting on six fronts in a war initiated by Iran. He mentioned Hezbollah attacks from Lebanon, Houthi activities in Yemen and Shiite groups in Syria and Iraq.
“I have a message for the tyrants in Tehran. If you hit us, we will hit you. There is no place in Iran that the long arm of Israel cannot reach. And this applies to the entire Middle East,” the Israeli prime minister emphasized.
