Israeli authorities have closed all three border crossings with Jordan following a shooting attack that killed three civilians, including two Israelis, Yohanan Shuri and Yuri Birnbaum. The shooting was carried out by a terrorist who arrived in a truck from Jordan at the Allenby crossing on the border with the West Bank.
The military has named two of the dead Israelis who worked at the cargo terminal, but the third man has not yet been named. The gunman who opened fire was killed at the scene by security forces. Bomb disposal experts searched the truck for explosives but found none. Israeli media reports identify the gunman as Maher Dhiab Hussein al-Jazi, 39.
The Jordanian Interior Ministry has launched an investigation into the incident and has detained several Jordanian drivers after the attack on the border crossing. The incident was the first such attack since Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2023. The Allenby crossing is mainly used for cargo transportation.
