The Israeli Ministry of Defense announced on September 17, 2025, the successful testing of a new laser missile defense system called “Iron Beam.” The system is capable of destroying aircraft, missiles, mines, and drones. The first complexes are expected to be operational by the end of this year.

Test Details

The tests were conducted in southern Israel and lasted several weeks. The laser system demonstrated its effectiveness against various threats, showing the ability to intercept objects in the initial trajectory. “Iron Beam” will be based at command posts already using the “Iron Dome” systems.

Advantages and Technologies

The development of “Iron Beam” was carried out by Elbit Systems and Rafael Advanced Defense Systems. The main advantage of this laser technology is the incomparably low interception cost compared to missile systems, where a single launch costs at least $50,000.

According to the Ministry of Defense Director General Amir Baram, this is the first time in history that a high-power laser system has reached full operational readiness. The head of Rafael, Yuval Steinitz, described “Iron Beam” as a revolutionary system that will have a significant impact on modern military operations.

Name History

The name “Iron Beam” is dedicated to Captain Eitan Oster of the “Egoz” special unit, who died in battle in southern Lebanon. His father, an engineer at the Ministry of Defense, was one of the project’s developers, highlighting the personal aspect of its naming.

Comparison with Other Systems

The laser system will complement the existing air defense systems in Israel, including the “Iron Dome,” “David’s Sling,” and “Arrow.” Over the past 24 hours, as the source indicates, the effectiveness of the “Iron Dome” has decreased: only 65% of Iranian missiles were intercepted, whereas previously this figure reached up to 90%.

Advanced technologies together with the new laser system can change the existing balance of power in the airspace, adding a new level of protection for Israel amid growing threats.
