Jordan's King Abdullah II told a delegation of US congressional aides on Sunday that the kingdom's authorities will not be drawn into the conflict in the Gaza Strip, attaching great importance to the safety of its citizens. At the same time, the monarch stressed the need to immediately achieve a ceasefire in Gaza and take measures to reduce tensions in order to prevent the crisis from turning into a full-scale war. Abdullah II also noted the threats posed by settler attacks on Palestinians in the West Bank and violations against holy sites in Jerusalem.
The king expressed his conviction that only the implementation of the idea of ”two states for two peoples” will ensure security for both Israelis and Palestinians. Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman al-Safadi also stated that the kingdom will not participate in the confrontation between Israel and Iran, which the parties have been notified of. The minister assured that the Jordanian military will intercept any dangerous objects in the country's airspace.
It is recalled that during Iran's strike on Israel in April, Jordanian forces shot down objects launched by Iran over Jordanian territory. The situation in the Middle East has escalated following the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran and Hezbollah senior adviser Hassan Nasrallah Fuad Shukr in Beirut. Iran and Hezbollah have promised revenge for their deaths.
