Chairman of the Palestinian Authority Mahmoud Abbas announced Palestine's intention to join BRICS at the sixteenth summit of this association. He expressed hope that Palestine would also be part of the group in the future. Abbas accused Israel of “genocide and ethnic cleansing” in Gaza, calling for implementation of the UN ceasefire.
The Palestinian leader noted the importance of BRICS support in ending the conflict in the Middle East. He proposed sanctions against Israel if it does not withdraw forces from Palestinian lands. Putin also supported the idea of resolving the conflict through the creation of an independent Palestinian state.
The BRICS summit in Kazan brought together leaders of various countries under sanctions or cooperating with the United States. Putin warned of the possibility of a full-scale war in the Middle East and stressed that “a peaceful solution is possible only through the establishment of an independent state of Palestine.”
