Iran, isolated and under international sanctions, is seeking to exert influence by building a coalition of allies who share Tehran’s anti-Western ideology. It is developing low-cost missiles and drones to compensate for its limited air defenses.

Most of Iran's military aircraft and air defense systems were acquired in the 1970s, before the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Because of this, Tehran has focused on equipping its military with limited capabilities, emphasizing asymmetric tactics such as drones and missiles that can be aimed at Israel but are useless in defending the country's airspace, notes The Wall Street Journal's Middle East correspondent Benoit Faucon.

“Most of (Iran's) combat aircraft and their weapons are outdated. In addition, given the country's vast territory, it is impossible to provide full air defense of all potential targets,” said Douglas Barry, a senior fellow in military aviation and space at the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London.
