On October 4, 2024, at 4:37 p.m., UN officials reported that most of Lebanon's nearly 900 shelters were overflowing. People fleeing Israeli military strikes are forced to sleep outdoors on the streets or in public parks, Reuters reports.
“Most of the nearly 900 collective shelters set up by the Lebanese government can no longer accommodate people,” Rula Amin, a spokeswoman for the UN refugee agency, said at a press briefing in Geneva.
They work with local authorities to find new places for people to live. Lebanese authorities say more than 1.2 million Lebanese have been forced to flee their homes and nearly 2,000 people have died since the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah began over the past year, most of them in the past two weeks.
Let us recall that Israel has launched a ground operation in Lebanon. The purpose of this invasion is to rid southern Lebanon of Hezbollah militants and positions in order to ensure peace in northern Israel and restore calm to the inhabitants. At the end of the operation, Israeli soldiers are likely to leave Lebanon.
