The leader of Syria, Ahmed al-Sharaa, announced a possible date for holding elections in the country after the overthrow of the government of Bashar al-Assad. Sharaa suggested that this process could take up to four years, and the development of a new constitution up to three years.
He also announced his intention to disband Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) at the National Dialogue Conference following their successful overthrow of Bashar al-Assad on December 8.
Ahmed al-Sharaa expressed hope that the new administration of US President Donald Trump will lift sanctions against Syria. Senior American diplomats visiting Damascus this month noted Sharaa's pragmatism.
Let us note that Ahmed al-Sharaa himself declared Syria’s disinterest in the conflict with Israel and called on the international community to intervene to ensure the country’s sovereignty.
The geopolitical consequences of the situation in Syria may have an impact on other regions, including Ukraine, as Vyacheslav Likhachev, an expert at the Center for Civil Liberties, noted in his article.
