New evidence suggests the natural phenomenon may have resulted in large concentrations of fish off the lake's shores that were easily caught. The study indicates that unique processes are occurring in the Sea of Galilee that may have caused abundance of fish off the coast, perhaps inspiring the biblical stories. This sea, also known as Lake Kinneret, is mentioned in the Bible in connection with Jesus' miracles with fish.

In Lake Kinneret, from time to time there are cases where thousands of dead fish rise to the surface. Scientists recorded such events in 2012, as well as in April 2007 and in the early 1990s. At certain periods, warm upper layers of water mix with cool lower layers, poor in oxygen, which leads to the suffocation of fish and their emergence to the surface under the influence of westerly winds.

A rare phenomenon known as inland upwelling occurs every spring, creating concentrations of fish that would have been visible to witnesses from biblical times. Similar phenomena have been observed in other places, for example, in Lake Erie in the USA and Canada. Scientists believe that these events could serve as the basis for the stories of fish miracles in the Bible.

Researchers note that similar fish kills, which may have inspired biblical miracles, may have occurred on the coast as early as two thousand years ago. “Our research points to places and times when similar fish kills may have occurred that may have inspired stories of biblical miracles.”
