Following a speech by Haaretz newspaper publisher Amos Schocken at a conference in London, a third of the members of the Knesset Finance Committee published a letter calling for an end to government funding for the publication. Schocken condemned a government that “calls freedom fighters 'terrorists' and defends the settler movement while ignoring the creation of a Palestinian state.”
The publisher stressed the need for sanctions against Israel, leaders opposed to the creation of a Palestinian state, and settlers. He called what was happening in the Occupied Territories and Gaza Strip a “second Nakba,” calling for the creation of a Palestinian state. The Minister of Communications proposed to stop all contacts with the Haaretz newspaper, assessing the publications as an obstacle to military and social goals.
The Director General of the Ministry of the Interior has already banned publications and cooperation with Haaretz until further notice.
