Sweden stops funding UNRWA, plans to end cooperation

Sweden has announced it will stop funding the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) due to a ban on its activities in Israel, Swedish media reported on Friday.

“Sweden will stop supporting UNRWA,” Minister of Foreign Trade and International Cooperation Benjamin Dawes is quoted as saying.

He also noted that assistance will be sent to the Gaza Strip from Stockholm through other channels.

In October, Israel banned UNRWA activities on its territory and parliament passed a law prohibiting contact with the agency.

The Swedish government condemned the Israeli decision.
