A summit was held in Paris where important security issues for Ukraine were discussed. President Volodymyr Zelensky, as well as representatives from the European Union, Australia, Japan, and Canada, participated in the event. The main topic was security guarantees for Kyiv in the context of a possible peace agreement with Russia.
Long-range missile supplies
During the meeting, a decision was made to supply Ukraine with long-range missiles. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated that this measure should significantly “strengthen the country’s arsenal” ahead of the impending negotiations with the Kremlin.
Security guarantees from Europe
French President Emmanuel Macron noted the readiness to provide Ukraine with security guarantees on the day of signing the peace agreement. According to him, the main preparatory work on these guarantees has been completed and is now awaiting approval at the political level.
US support
Nevertheless, the participants of the meeting pointed out the need for support from the US to deploy “deterrence forces” on Ukrainian territory. Donald Trump had previously intended to provide such support, but the details of the United States’ involvement in future security guarantees remain unclear. Some European diplomats reported that work on military “technical” plans has been completed, but their content remains secret.
Statements from the Ukrainian side
After the summit, Andriy Yermak, head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, emphasized that security guarantees must be strong and effective, covering all areas: air, sea, land, and cyberspace.
Warnings from NATO
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte also expressed the importance of strong deterrence forces so that Russia does not dare to take further actions. He urged Western countries to be cautious regarding Russia, pointing to clear evidence of its intentions in Ukraine.
Prospects for a truce
Although the summit participants reached a consensus that it is premature to talk about peace, former British military attaché in Kyiv and Moscow John Foreman noted the importance of maintaining a strong Ukrainian army. In his opinion, this is necessary for long-term European support, and there is even a risk that Ukraine may not be able to rely on the help of its allies if Russia needs to be punished for the attack.
We remind you that such a situation is reflected in real conditions and relations between states.
