On Borichev Tik Street in the Podolsk district of Kyiv, it is planned to create a beautiful green square in honor of Golda Meir, one of the most outstanding women of the 20th century.
Golda was born on May 3, 1898 in Kyiv and spent her childhood there.
She became Foreign Minister (1956-1966) and then Prime Minister of Israel from 1969-1974. She died on December 8, 1978 in Jerusalem.
The wall, symbolizing the life of Golda Meir, will be made of a special “Jerusalem stone” – pink-golden vapnyak, which decorates the surfaces of buildings in the capital of Israel. Quotes from Golda Meir’s book of memoirs will be engraved on the surface of the vapnyak. The square will be equipped with all amenities for access by disabled people and parents with prams.
It is interesting to note that this territory, located in a prestigious area of the capital of Ukraine, was previously under long-term lease from the Russian Embassy, which planned to build new facilities for Russian diplomats. In 2014, the lease agreement was terminated, and the land returned to the municipal property of Kyiv. In 2023, the Kiev City Council assigned the territory the status of a public garden and named it in honor of Golda Meir – for the anniversary of one of the founders of the state of Israel.
To develop the design of the future park, the efforts of several architectural bureaus from Ukraine, Germany and Spain were combined, which proposed several concepts. The Department of Cultural Heritage of Kyiv chose the best option of all those proposed. The Federation of Jewish Communities of Ukraine is responsible for organizing the arrangement of the square.
