The forgotten capital of Khorsabad, an ancient Assyrian city, has been found in Iraq.

Archaeologists have discovered in northern Iraq the remains of a huge villa, royal gardens and other structures buried deep underground in what was the ancient Assyrian capital of Khorsabad 2,700 years ago. The researchers managed to make this amazing discovery using the magnetic survey method.

An international team of researchers carried out an exhaustive magnetic survey using a sophisticated magnetometer and found the remains of a huge 127-room villa, royal gardens, a town square, a water gate and five large buildings.

A group of scientists led by geophysicist Jörg Fassbinder managed to survey more than 259 thousand square meters of territory in Iraq. The structures were built during the time of King Sargon, who ruled Assyria from 721 to 705 BC. Although the king died in 705 BC, his successor Sennacherib refused to continue the project, moving the center of the empire to Nineveh.

Khorsabad was forgotten for more than two millennia until exploration began in the 19th and 20th centuries. Now archaeologists have found many interesting artifacts, including the famous statues of Lamassu – winged bulls with human heads. Despite the difficulties posed by the sack of Khorsabad by the Islamic State, Fassbinder's team managed to carry out a survey using a magnetometer.
