The Houthis blew up an oil tanker they had seized in the Red Sea.

The Houthi movement attacked the Sounion oil tanker sailing under the Greek flag in the Red Sea, international media reported. The attack took place on August 21. They used small arms, shells and an unmanned boat. The tanker was carrying about 1 million barrels of oil. The Houthis released a video showing masked militants with machine guns boarding the ship and planting an explosive device, which led to several explosions on the vessel. The crew abandoned the tanker after repeated Houthi attacks.

A French destroyer participating in a European Union operation in the Red Sea rescued the Sounion's crew of 25 Filipinos and Russians, as well as four private security guards, and took them to Djibouti. The Houthis said the attack on the tanker was a response to American policy.

The video shows the gunmen donning masks, arming themselves with machine guns and boarding the Sounion after the crew abandoned ship. They planted an explosive device on a deck hatch leading to oil tanks, causing at least six simultaneous explosions.

The Houthi news agency SABA published a statement from the Houthi Movement, which said the Americans were lying when they claimed they were seeking to stop the operations of Palestinian actors. The EU naval mission Aspides said it was preparing to act to prevent an environmental disaster.

Western countries and the UN have warned that the Sounion oil spill could cause irreversible damage to coral reefs and marine life in the Red Sea. The State Department has yet to comment on the new Houthi video. The Islamic radical movement Ansar Allah controls northern Yemen, including part of the coast. The government they have created is not recognized by most countries in the world.
