The Iranian National Security Council approved a new agreement with the IAEA.

The National Security Council of Iran on Sunday approved a new “cooperation order” with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Agreement Details

The Council’s statement emphasized that the text of the agreements was agreed upon by the nuclear committee. An important point is that any “hostile actions” against Iran, including the reinstatement of canceled UN Security Council resolutions, will lead to the termination of these agreements.

Background

• On September 9, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi and IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi signed an agreement in Cairo to restore bilateral contacts initiated after Israeli-American attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities in June. The negotiations were mediated by Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelati.
• In response to the strikes, Iran’s parliament and the Constitutional Council passed a law at the end of June that suspended the country’s cooperation with the IAEA.
• According to the law, any further agreements with the IAEA require approval from the Supreme National Security Council, especially after the truce with Israel.

Current Events

Significant changes in the relations between Iran and the IAEA were preceded by strikes carried out by Israel and the USA on Iranian nuclear facilities in July, which resulted in the suspension of IAEA inspectors’ access to nuclear sites. This circumstance created additional complications for the negotiation process.
