The meeting between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has been postponed. This event, initially considered an important step in preparing for the summit between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, has become a focus of media attention.
The official reasons for the cancellation of the meeting on October 21, 2025, have not yet been named. However, according to CNN, Rubio and Lavrov have different expectations regarding the resolution of the conflict in Ukraine, which led to disagreements during the coordination of positions.
Confirmation from the White House
The White House confirmed that this meeting will not take place this week but did not specify the rescheduling dates. CNN sources reported that there is currently a pause in negotiations between the diplomats. Trump does not plan to meet with Putin in the coming days, and the meeting between Rubio and Lavrov, as stated by Barak Ravid, is not required since the previous conversation was productive.
Ravid pointed to the words of an official White House representative, who also noted: “President Trump does not plan to meet with Putin in the near future. Rubio and Lavrov had a fruitful conversation.”
Plans for high-level diplomatic meetings
Later, Trump announced that the presidents of Russia and the USA have agreed to meet with high-level advisors next week. The first such meeting on the US side will be led by Marco Rubio, with other appointed individuals also participating.
According to Reuters, the meeting between Rubio and Lavrov was supposed to take place on October 23.
Reaction from the Russian side
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov commented on the situation, noting: “You cannot postpone what was not planned.” Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov expressed a similar opinion, adding that the information disseminated by some Western publications is not confirmed.
Discussion of meeting preparations
The day before, Lavrov contacted Rubio to discuss the upcoming dialogue. During the conversation, the parties noted a “constructive discussion” and collective efforts for a stable resolution of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
