Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was killed when a hidden bomb exploded in the Tehran guesthouse where he was staying, according to a New York Times investigation. The device was detonated remotely, killing his bodyguard as well. Haniyeh was in Tehran for the inauguration of Iran's new president, and the blast rocked the building, shattering windows and partially destroying an outer wall.

Iran and Hamas have accused Israel of the killing. The killing could spark a new wave of violence in the Middle East and disrupt negotiations over the Gaza war. Israel has denied responsibility.

The assassination took months of planning and close surveillance of the compound. The operation was carried out outside Qatar, where Hamas' political leadership is based. The blast occurred around 2 a.m. local time, killing Haniyeh and his bodyguard.

Iran's supreme leader called an emergency meeting of the national security council and ordered a retaliatory strike against Israel. Haniyeh's killing came amid heightened security in Tehran ahead of the inauguration of Iran's new president, Masoud Pezeshkian.

The head of Mossad said his agency was “obliged” to hunt Hamas leaders.
